Frequently asked questions
I’m not a patient at Health on Rusden, can I still attend the ante-natal / pregnancy planning clinic?
Do I need a referral?
A referral is not required to attend our ante-natal clinics.
What does the pregnancy planning clinic cost? Is it covered by Medicare or my health fund?
Your ‘Delivery Planning Visit’ appointment is 100% covered by Medicare and there are no additional costs for our delivery services. Clinic visits outside of this are $100 and receive a Medicare rebate.
What is an ante-natal test?
Ante-natal tests are an important part of your pregnancy care and help make sure that you and your baby are healthy throughout your pregnancy. Different types of tests, including blood tests, urine tests and ultrasound scans are used to check different aspects of your own and your baby’s health. Some tests are recommended for everyone, while others are offered only to women at a greater risk of a particular condition.
Some ante-natal tests are screening tests. This means that they are designed to assess the chance of you or your baby having a particular condition. If you receive a high-risk result on a screening test, you might decide to do a diagnostic test that can tell you for certain whether your baby has that condition.
At your first ante-natal visit, your doctor or midwife will explain which antenatal tests are recommended for you and when you should have them.
What is a morphology scan?
A morphology (body part) scan is a routine antenatal test usually done at 18 to 20 weeks of pregnancy. It is an ultrasound that checks your baby’s size and body organs.
Your doctor is likely to recommend you have this test, but the decision to do so is yours. A morphology scan is sometimes called a ‘fetal anomaly’ scan since it is one way your doctor will check your baby for birth defects.
What is a post-natal check?
The 6-week postpartum check is a comprehensive check to assess how your body has recovered after your pregnancy and baby’s birth. By 6 weeks after birth, most women have recovered from labour and childbirth.
It is also an opportunity to review your general health and wellbeing. Your physical and emotional health are equally as important.
The 6-week postnatal check is also a chance to see if any conditions relating to your pregnancy have resolved, for example, hypertension or gestational diabetes.
